Home MenuBicycle Laws + Safety Tips
We encourage everyone using the roads to respect each other, share the road, and travel safely. On public streets, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers and are therefore subject to the same rules of the road.
Share the Road
-
Obey all traffic signs and signals
-
Yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk
-
Go with the traffic flow. Ride on the right in the same direction as cars
-
Use the bike lane when traveling slower than traffic except when making a left turn, passing, avoiding hazardous conditions, or where a right turn is authorized
-
Do not stop or park a bicycle on a bike path
Bike Safety Tips
-
Ride with both hands on the handlebars except when signaling a turn or stop
-
Stop and look left-right-left for traffic before entering a street
-
Stay alert – use your eyes to look for things that could make you fall, like potholes, pebbles, or other road hazards
-
Stay alert – use your ears to listen for traffic. Don’t wear earphones while riding
-
Watch for parked cars and cars pulling out or into parking spaces or driveways
-
Check your equipment. Make sure your bike tires are properly inflated and that the brakes work
-
Use a front white light, red rear light and reflectors when visibility is poor
-
Don’t forget your bicycle helmet. Wear it flat on your head and buckled
