SB 1383 Webinars and Workshops

In partnership with Burrtec, the City offered free webinars and workshops on SB 1383 Organic Waste Recycling and Food Recovery to all La Quinta residents and businesses. Our local businesses have been recycling their organic waste since 2021 as required by Assembly Bill 1826, and with an outstanding 99% participation rate!

Residential organic waste recycling, except in gated communities, started on November 1, 2022. Residents in gated communities did not begin this program until Fall 2023.

Upcoming FREE Shred Events

Do you have personal documents, photos, file folders, or envelopes to shred and dispose of? The City of La Quinta, in partnership with Burrtec and Desert Arc, hosts several FREE Shred Events each year.

Here are a few notes about the Shred Events:

  • Up to 4 boxes of documents are permitted per vehicle.

  • Residents get their boxes back.

  • Having your documents in a plastic bag is accepted.

  • Documents are disposed of while the resident is present.

  • There is a camera inside the Shred Truck that allows residents to watch their documents be shredded (residents are welcome to park and walk over to the truck to watch).

  • If a resident has more than 4 boxes, they are able to get back in line and do a second drop off until a new vehicle arrives.

The next Shred Event will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the City Hall North Parking Lot (off Calle Tampico). This is a FREE service for all La Quinta residents and businesses!

The Burgundy Barrel is for regular household trash, pet waste (in secured bags), and any items that cannot be recycled.

SB 1383 mandates standardized waste and recycling container colors across California. The new barrel color for trash will be Gray. Burrtec will replace and issue new containers with the new standardized color as older containers reach the end of their useful life. This will occur gradually and as determined by Burrtec. They have until January 2036 to completely switch out all containers.
