La Quinta city council members are elected “at large,” meaning each one is elected by voters from throughout the entire city and represent all citizens of La Quinta.

How long is the City Council’s term of office?
City council members serve four-year terms, with the Mayor serving a two-year term. There is no limit as to how many terms a city council member can serve. The terms of office are staggered, with two council seats filled at one election and the other two seats filled at another election two years later.
How are La Quinta’s mayor and mayor pro tem selected?
The mayor is selected through a public election process. The mayor pro tem is selected by the city council from among its own members. The mayor is the presiding officer at council meetings, with the mayor pro tem filling that role in the mayor’s absence. Both the mayor and mayor pro tem have the same voting power as any other council member.
Can anyone attend a City Council meeting?
Council meetings are public meetings and anyone is welcome to attend. Special closed sessions that deal with personnel and some legal matters are not open to the public.
