Things to know about Garage Sales in the City of La Quinta per the La Quinta Municipal Code 11.88

• Garage Sales/Yard Sales are considered “Special Events”

• A permit is required prior to the date of the event

  • The $10-dollar permit can be purchased at the Hub, located in City Hall 78-495 Calle Tampico

  • It can also be purchased through the City’s website via E-Trakit

• You are allowed four (4) special event sales in a calendar year

• Sales are allowed between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

• Sales cannot continue for more than 72 consecutive hours

• This type of sale is intended for the sale of household or personal goods, not for commercial sale of goods.

• All remaining items must be removed from public view at the end of the sale

• A tarp used to cover items from public view is not an acceptable remedy

• Shall not exceed six square feet.

• A maximum of two signs are permitted per sale.

• One sign may be posted at the residence

• Shall only be displayed on permitted day of sale.

• Are not permitted in rights of way or on any utility poles or traffic control posts.

• All signs shall be removed by applicant at the end of the sale.

FAILURE TO REMOVE SIGNS OR OBTAIN A PERMIT WILL RESULT IN A CITATION

SIGN PLACED IN PROHIBITED AREAS ARE SUBJECT TO A CITATION

PER LA QUINTA MUNICIPAL CODE 1.09

Fines shall be assessed in the amounts specified by ordinance of the city council, and shall not exceed the following:

1.   A fine not exceeding one hundred (100) dollars for a first violation;

2.   A fine not exceeding two hundred (200) dollars for a second violation of the same ordinance or permit within one year from the date of the first violation; and

3.   A fine not exceeding five hundred (500) dollars for each additional violation of the same ordinance or permit within one year from the date of the first violation.

Permits

Garage Sale Permits are $10 and can be purchased online or at the Customer Service Center located in the South Wing at City Hall.

Monday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
