The Coachella Valley Conservation Commission (CVCC) established a Trails Management Subcommittee in 2008 to annually review and evaluate the Public Use and Trails Plan for the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains Conservation Area; provide input on trails issues related to the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (Plan) to the CVCC; make recommendations for decommissioning and removing trails; provide information and education to trail users about the trails management program, to mention a few.

The CVCC is a joint powers authority of elected representatives that overseas and manages the Plan, which is a shared regional vision for balanced growth to conserve Coachella Valley’s natural resources while also building a strong economy vital to our future; tt protects 240,000 acres of open space and 27 species, enhances infrastructure without environmental conflicts, offers opportunities for recreation, tourism and job creation, and ensures the survival of endangered species.  The CVCC has no regulatory powers and no land use authority.  Its primary purpose is to buy land from willing sellers in the conservation areas and to manage that land.

The Trails Management Subcommittee will consist of: 1) one representative each from the cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Indio, and La Quinta, appointed by the respective city councils; 2) one representative each from the CVMC, County Parks, the Wildlife Agencies, USFS, BLM, and the MAC, appointed by the respective agencies; and 3) at least 5 individual representatives of trail interest organizations, environmental organizations, and independent researchers, appointed by CVCC.

The Trails Management Subcommittee meets every other month, on the third Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., in the CVAG conference room located at 73710 Fred Waring Dr., Suite 104, Palm Desert, CA 92260.
